EcoHealth & Wellness would like to share some of the recent research that has come out regarding treatments with breast cancers.  Doctors are now saying that by eating less and exercising more 1/3 of the new breast cancer cases can actually be avoided.  Early detection by screening is still advantageous if you have a family history, but many doctors agree that the screening technology is as advanced as it can be right now.  But what we can control as an individual is our lifestyle.

A woman’s lifetime chance of getting breast cancer is about one in eight. Obese women are up to 60 percent more likely to develop any cancer than normal-weight women, according to a 2006 study by British researchers.

Many breast cancers are fueled by estrogen, a hormone produced in fat tissue. So experts suspect that the fatter a woman is, the more estrogen she’s likely to produce, which could in turn fuel breast cancer. Even in slim women, experts believe exercise can help reduce the cancer risk by converting more fat into muscle.

The American Cancer Society Web site says the connection between weight and cancer risk is complex. It says risk appears to increase for women who gain weight as adults, but not for women who have been overweight since childhood. The cancer society recommends 45 to 60 minutes of physical activity five or more days a week to reduce the risk of breast cancer.

Drinking less alcohol might also help. Experts estimate that having more than a couple of drinks a day can boost the risk of breast cancer by 4 to 10 percent.

After studies several years ago linked hormone-replacement therapy to cancer, millions of women abandoned the treatment, leading to a sharp drop in breast cancer rates. Experts said a similar reduction might be seen if women ate healthier and exercised more.

Holmes, the Harvard expert, said changing diet and nutrition is arguably easier than tackling other breast cancer risk factors.

In the 1980s and 1990s, breast cancer rates steadily increased, paralleling a rise in obesity and the use of estrogen-containing hormones after menopause.

La Vecchia said countries like Italy and France — where obesity rates have been stable for the past two decades — show that weight can be controlled at a population level.

“It’s hard to lose weight, but it’s not impossible,” he said. “The potential benefit of preventing cancer is worth it.”

Recent research has shown that placebos are just as effective as their expensive counterparts when it comes to treating depression.  Depression is a condition, which currently has very little understanding yet many people suffer from its complications.  In a period of 10 years, from 1996 to 2005, the sale of antidepressants more than doubled as they were hailed as a new wonder drug to treat depression.

There was a large debate about whether or not to publish the findings of this study, since as it has been proven that the placebo treatment works, a person truly needs to believe what they are taking will make them better.  Why tell those who are taking antidepressants that a sugar pill will work just as well when they believe that their medicine is working just fine.  Because people deserve to be able to make informed decisions, or that is the belief of Kirsch, the author of the original study on the effectiveness of antidepressants.  The responses he is receiving are rather mixed, but mostly lean towards the negative as most people are frustrated at him debunking what they believed was a good system.

EcoHealth & Wellness recommends that if you are taking fish oil supplements that you read the following article to determine if you are taking one that make contain PCBs (polychlorinated biphenyl compounds) that are known to cause cancer and other birth defects.

People buying certain fish oil supplements to get the benefit of omega-3 fatty acids are ingesting chemicals banned in 1979, according to environmental advocates who filed a lawsuit Monday aimed at forcing manufacturers to warn consumers.

The lawsuit names five makers of supplements found to contain polychlorinated biphenyl compounds, drugstores CVS and Rite Aid, which sell those products, and Omega Protein Inc., of Houston, which touts itself as the world’s largest producer of omega-3 fish oil.

Attorney David Roe filed the suit in San Francisco Superior Court contending Proposition 65, a law he helped write, requires consumers to be warned when products contain toxic ingredients above the limit deemed safe by regulators.

Some of the tested supplements exceed California’s daily limit for PCBs by a factor of 10 in terms of the cancer risk, Roe said.

A limit has not been set for the risk of birth defects. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency has been studying that risk for 20 years, said co-plaintiff Benson Chiles, director of the Coastal Ocean Coalition in New Jersey.

“Our message to the public is: ‘Buyer beware,’” Chiles said.

Manufacturers of the supplements contest the results of the tests, saying their products are safe.

Two companies whose products were tested issued swift responses.

Twinlab’s chief science officer, Greg Grochoski, said the two Twinlab Norwegian cod liver oils tested are distilled to reduce impurities such as PCBs and meet government standards.

“Twinlab cannot comment on the validity or accuracy of the test results referenced in a press release” issued by the California plaintiffs, added spokesman Justin Boone, noting Twinlab products were reported as having among the lowest levels of impurities.

Stephen McCauley of public relations firm Porter Novelli responded for Pharmavite LLC, which makes Nature Made fish oil supplements, saying its products comply with all federal laws as well as “the stringent industry standards” set by the Council for Responsible Nutrition, a trade group.

“PCBs are ubiquitous within the environment, which means that all fish – whether fish found in oceans and rivers or fish oil supplements – contain at least trace amounts of PCBs,” said Erin Hlasney of the Council for Responsible Nutrition. “The lawyers are using California’s Prop. 65 statute to bring attention to their case by attempting to frame this as a public health concern, when in reality, fish oil has enjoyed decades of safe use.”

Chris Manthey, a Surfrider volunteer in New Jersey and one of the plaintiffs, said, “Many of them say their supplements have been ‘treated’ to remove or reduce PCBs. Since they don’t say how much PCB contamination is still left, even consumers who choose ‘treated’ supplements can’t know what PCB levels they’re swallowing.”

The tests, done by a California lab at a cost of $1,000 per product, measured PCBs two ways, according to the plaintiffs.

One way determines daily exposure to PCBs by looking at all 209 separate compounds in the PCB chemical family. The second way looks at toxicity based on the 12 most toxic compounds in the PCB family.

Some supplements did better on one test than the other. Now Foods cod liver oil and salmon oil were high in daily exposure to PCBs and lower on the toxicity measure. Nature Made cod liver oil was high in terms of the toxicity measure and lower in terms of daily exposure if taken as directed.

Roe said more expensive products did not necessarily get better results.

The plaintiffs, which include the Mateel Environmental Justice Foundation of Eureka, said they selected products based on a survey by the Environmental Defense Fund of fish oil purification practices at 75 companies.

“We were not cherry-picking,” said Manthey, noting the exposure level for Now Foods shark liver oil was low.

Scott Daniel, marketing communications manager at Now Foods, said the company has been investigating the concerns raised by environmental advocates for months.

“The current testing methods for PCBs are highly variable and incomplete,” Daniel said. “There are no universal standards to test for the 209 different compounds that are included under the term PCB. However, we believe we are in compliance with the most widely followed industry and regulatory standards.”

Daniel recommended consumers choose products made from small fish with short life spans, such as anchovies and sardines.

Solgar and GNC, manufacturers of other products named in the lawsuit, did not respond immediately.

New Leaf Community Market, a local organic health food chain, has been stocking nine brands of fish oil supplements at its Felton store, but once vitamins manager Tracy Frankl heard about the lawsuit, she pulled Twinlab’s emulsified Norwegian cod liver oil off the shelf.

“We don’t want to sell a product we don’t feel is safe,” said New Leaf co-owner Scott Roseman.

He said New Leaf would talk to fish oil manufacturers about their products and their labeling.

Three local companies make supplements with fish oil, but none was tested for this lawsuit.

“We feel consumers should have access to accurate information about environmental contaminants and that complete transparency around freshness and purity is very, very important,” said Tiffany Diehl, strategic project manager at Nordic Naturals in Watsonville.

The company has participated in third-party testing and posts results on its Web site, she said.

10 PRODUCTS TESTED

n Nature Made cod liver oil and odorless fish oil; manufacturer Pharmavite LLC in Northridge

n Twinlab Norwegian cod liver oil and emulsified Norwegian cod liver oil; manufactured in American Fork, Utah

n Now Foods shark liver oil, double strength cod liver oil and salmon oil; manufactured in Bloomingdale, Ill.

n Solgar 100 percent pure Norwegian shark liver oil complex and Norwegian cod liver oil; manufactured in Leonia, N.J.

n GNC liquid Norwegian cod liver oil; manufactured in Pittsburgh

Lab tests of these 10 fish oil supplements containing omega-3 fatty acids found they contain some of the 209 polychlorinated biphenyl compounds known to cause cancer and birth defects.

PCBs became subject to California’s Prop. 65 warning requirement in 1989 for cancer and in 1991 for birth defects. Once widely used in electrical transformers, PCBs were banned by Congress in 1979, but the Great Lakes and the Hudson River remain contaminated despite cleanup efforts. The chemical, which was made to last a long time without breaking down, accumulates in the food chain.

Much of the focus recently has been on the dangers of mercury included in vaccines, but Dr. Ayoub discussed the real dangers of including Aluminum in the vaccines at the National Vaccine Information Center Conference.  Aluminum, like any other adjuvant, is added to the vaccine in order to boost the host’s immune response to the antigen. The antigen is what your body responds to and makes antibodies against (the virus being injected). By boosting your body’s immune response, the vaccine manufacturer can use a smaller amount of antigen, which makes production less expensive.

Interestingly enough, according to Dr. Ayoub, even our modern medical literature admits that how this happens exactly is still a mystery. And it’s not a consistent finding. He mentions a couple of studies on the more recent HPV vaccine, which found that the aluminum adjuvant had no effect at all on the immune response…

So, although aluminum is frequently added to vaccines for this particular purpose, no one knows with any degree of confidence that it actually makes a more effective vaccine.

Which Vaccines Contain Aluminum?

Many vaccines contain aluminum, including:

  • Hepatitis A
  • Hepatitis B
  • DTaP (diphtheria, tetanus, pertussis)
  • Hib vaccine
  • Pneumococcal vaccine
  • Gardasil (HPV vaccine)

This is NOT an all-inclusive list, however. Your best bet is to read through the package insert of each vaccine in question.

You can find a comprehensive list of approved vaccines on the FDA’s website, with links to each package insert.

The amount of aluminum in each vaccine will vary. However, according to Dr. Ayoub, it’s important to realize that the toxicity is not entirely dependent on dose, but also on how it’s distributed in your body.

For example, a small dose released rapidly from the injection site into your body can cause a rapid rise in blood aluminum levels. So a small dose released quickly may be much more toxic than a large dose that ends up staying longer in the tissue at the injection site.

The variables of personal differences and differences in how the injection is given are too numerous to count, and they may play a role in how toxic a shot ends up being once injected into your body.

Problems with the Legal Limits on Aluminum

In the U.S., the FDA sets the guidelines for what and how much aluminum is allowed in vaccines. According to the FDA, the maximum amount of allowable elemental aluminum is 850 mcg per vaccine.

Clearly, it makes a major difference if this amount is injected into a small infant or an adult, but the FDA makes no distinction to that effect.

In fact, when Dr. Ayoub dug deeper into the FDA regulations on aluminum, he discovered that the limitation of 850 mcg per vaccine is based on the effectiveness of the adjuvant role of aluminum and has nothing to do with limitations based on safety whatsoever!

Shocking?

Yes! But not surprising, at this point.

However, it may be wise to keep this fact in mind, as those who argue that the amounts of aluminum in vaccines is a “legally safe dose” are really just citing a regulatory guideline that is based solely on the efficacy of the vaccine, and NOT based on any safety data whatsoever.

Approach to Treatment and Prevention of Aluminum Ttoxicity

 1) Avoid/minimize exposures

  •  Test drinking water with and without filter
  •  Avoid cooking with aluminum utensils/pans
  •  Never store food in contact with aluminum
  •  Use non aluminum baking soda, deodorant, toothpaste
  •  Avoid aluminum-containing vaccines, or separate multiple aluminum- containing vaccines by 2-4 weeks, only take single formulas/shots
  •  Avoid drinks in aluminum pouches/cans, especially if they contain citrates/ascorbates which enhance aluminum absorption
  •  Take vitamin C and fruit juices on an empty stomach
  •  Minimize exposure to calcium carbonate-containing medicines

2) Testing for body levels

Blood aluminum only useful in cases of large, acute exposures (i.e., acute vaccine reaction) for chronic exposures: hair analysis, post-provocative (EDTA or DFO) urine metals, urinary porphyrin testing

3) Treatment of deleterious actions of chronic aluminum exposure maintain normal serum vitamin D levels

  •  Melatonin has powerful antioxidant properties and is particularly depleted from aluminum exposure
  •  Curcumin
  •  Supplements or foods that dirve the methylation process (methionine cycle), i.e., B6, B12, folic acid, folinic acid, etc
  • Natural chelation like cilantro

Vitamin D

Posted by: ecohealthwellness | Comments (0)

EcoHealth & Wellness would like to remind you that as spring is approaching that enjoying the sun can provide you with wonderful health benefits.  Exposure to sunlight enhances production of vitamin D in the skin, which is good for us as vitamin D is the most common deficiency in the U.S.

Vitamin D deficiency has been linked to increased risk for many common and serious diseases, including some common cancers, diabetes, cardiovascular disease, and osteoporosis. Studies suggest that exposure to sunlight, which enhances the production of vitamin D in the skin, prevents many chronic diseases.

Vitamin D is essential for the formation, growth, and repair of bones. Vitamin D is necessary for normal calcium absorption and immune function. It also improves muscle strength and helps reduce inflammation.

For those of us with darker skin (more melanin) or if you consistently wear sun protection, longer exposure to the sun is necessary to recive the amount to be converted into vitamin D.

Jackson and Jacobs specifically designed the 360° weight loss plan to provide people wanting to lose weight with virtually all the necessary amounts of protein, carbohydrates, vitamins, minerals, trace elements and essential fatty acids in proper balance.

With the help and ongoing support of 360° Weight loss, people on the 360° plan are empowered to make better food choices and are not required to purchase food products or meal replacements. Food preparation is very simple on the plan. Wholesome readily available foods such as meat, fish, cheese, eggs, vegetables and fruit are recommended.

To help minimize cravings between meals, nutritional packets are taken each day. As well as helping to minimize cravings, these packets provide the body with additional vitamins, minerals and amino acids.

By following the recommended eating plan and consuming the specially prepared nutrition packets, the bodies of those on the 360° plan burn stored fat cells as energy, rather than depleting vital fluids and muscle mass. A simple test is performed each day at home to confirm that the fat burning process is taking place as it should.

Once participants on the plan have reached their ideal weight, they are placed on a well-balanced maintenance program. During this part of the program, their body continues to reshape until it reaches its optimum weight. This weight is decided by our body’s own metabolism.

The 360° Weight Loss Plan offers you:

Natural Medicine

Posted by: ecohealthwellness | Comments (0)

EcoHealth & Wellness practices natural medicine and believes that the body has its own innate ability to heal itself and improve your health conditions.  As an ND, Dr. Jackson practices the 6 principles of natural medicine.

  • Let nature heal. Our bodies have such a powerful, innate instinct for self-healing. By finding and removing the barriers to this self-healing—such as poor diet or unhealthy habits—naturopathic physicians can nurture this process.

  • Identify and treat causes. Naturopathic physicians understand that symptoms will only return unless the root illness is addressed. Rather than cover up symptoms, they seek to find and treat the cause of these symptoms.

  • First, do no harm. Naturopathic physicians follow three precepts to ensure their patients’ safety:
    • Use low-risk procedures and healing compounds—such as dietary supplements, herbal extracts and homeopathy—with few or no side effects.
    • When possible, do not suppress symptoms, which are the body’s efforts to self-heal. For example, the body may cook up a fever in reaction to a bacterial infection. Fever creates an inhospitable environment for the harmful bacteria, thereby destroying it. Of course, the naturopathic physician would not allow the fever to get dangerously high.
    • Customize each diagnosis and treatment plan to fit each patient. We all heal in different ways and the naturopathic physician respects our differences.

  • Educate patients. Naturopathic medicine believes that doctors must be educators, as well as physicians. That’s why naturopathic physicians teach their patients how to eat, exercise, relax and nurture themselves physically and emotionally. They also encourage self-responsibility and work closely with each patient.

  • Treat the whole person. We each have a unique physical, mental, emotional, genetic, environmental, social, sexual and spiritual makeup. The naturopathic physician knows that all these factors affect our health. That’s why he or she includes them in a carefully tailored treatment strategy.

  • Prevent illness. “An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure” has never been truer. Proactive medicine saves money, pain, misery and lives. That’s why naturopathic physicians evaluate risk factors, heredity and vulnerability to disease. By getting treatment for greater wellness, we’re less likely to need treatment for future illness.
  • These principles are the guidelines behind alternative and holistic medicine.

    Diabetics & Celiac Disease

Posted by: ecohealthwellness | Comments (0)

EcoHealth & Wellness recommends that if your child is suffering from diabetes that he or she be checked for celiac disease as well.  Celiac disease is an allergy to products containing gluten, which is often found in most products that contain wheat and other similar food sources.  Recent research has found that 1 in 10 children with diabetes also have celiac disease.

Researchers have found that celiac disease often precedes Type 1 diabetes, in children that have both conditions, as reported on celiac.com in January.
Up to 10% of children with Type 1 have clinical celiac disease, according to findings presented at Gastro 2009 in London, UK by T. Hansson of Uppsala University Hospital, Sweden.
Hansson explained that researchers detected elevated levels of celiac disease-associated antibodies in children with recent onset Type 1 diabetes.
“The presence of autoantibodies against tissue transglutaminase implies that celiac disease was present already at the time of Type 1 diabetes onset in all children having both diseases,” he said. “Hence, celiac disease may precede and cause Type 1 diabetes in children with both diseases.”

For more information on celiac disease click on the picture above and it will take you to celiac.com.

    The Truth About Water

Posted by: ecohealthwellness | Comments (1)

EcoHealth & Wellness recommends using alkaline based water to provide yourself with extra benefits to give the body overall wellness.  Kangen is one type of water that has been alkalized and oxidation reduced to create a water that will do more than just hydrate the body.

Kangen is a Japanese word, best translated into English as “Return To Original” which means several things when used to describe water.

Kangen water is simply an easier way of stating: Alkaline, ionized, anti-oxidant electron rich, restructured, micro clustered, active hydrogen saturated, oxidation reduced, powerful living water.

Kangen water can Flush Toxins and Neutralize Acidity in your body.
Kangen water is water that has gone through a Special Electrolysis Process that changes the pH of the water to ALKALINE and much, much more.
First, it describes water returned to the state in which water was often found in nature before the earth became polluted.
Second, it implies that it will help to return your body to its original condition when you were young. Kangen water is a powerful antioxidant, perhaps more powerful than any single food or vitamin supplement because Kangen water contains active hydrogen which supplies huge amounts of extra electrons to our body.

Kangen water is also known to have small clusters of 5 to 6 water molecules , as a result of the electrolysis process. Making it a Super Hydrating water. You can taste the difference in your first glass. Tap water is typically 12 to 15 molecules per cluster. That is over double the size of Kangen water.

Small clusters also mean that your body can readily absorb the minerals in this water into your cells in mere seconds. Reverse Osmosis, Distilled and tap water will slosh around in your stomach and often flush key minerals out of your body because they lack these important properties.

This is particularly important for your metabolism since smaller elements pass through cell membranes more easily and eliminate acidic wastes and toxins from your body more effectively. With this water, your body will enjoy the quicker cellular hydration and super waste elimination.

The electrical charge of Kangen machine re-arranges healthy minerals that are naturally included in your tap water. As a result, Kangen water contains essential minerals, such as Calcium, Magnesium, and Potassium, in an ionic form that can be assimilated immediately into your body.
It is now a common knowledge that a lot of medical benefits come from anti-oxidant properties.

          USES FOR ALKALINE WATER
                or KANGEN WATER:
    Flushes toxins.
    Disarms Free Radicals.
    Restores alkalinity in your body.
Increases stable oxygen in your body.
    Enhances delivery of nutrients.
Cooking with Alkaline water improves the nutritional value and the taste of food and drinks such as, tea and coffee.
It makes acidic foods and drinks more alkaline.
