I love yoga for my family because it can be practiced anywhere. There are several studies showing the many benefits of kids doing yoga.
Yoga Teaches Us About Our Bodies-When we practice the physical postures or exercises (called asanas), we learn how to move more freely and with greater ease and awareness. These postures help our bodies become strong and flexible.
Helps to Develop Focus And Concentration- Practicing poses encourages children to clear their mind and focus. Studies have also shown that a regular yoga practice can improve school behavior and grades.
Yoga Teaches Us How To Breathe Better.
When we breathe deeply and fully we become more aware, we can bring peacefulness or energy to our bodies.
Mind-Body Connection- Let’s face it, we live in a very fast paced world where kids feel all kinds of pressure mentally, physically and socially, while trying to keep up with everyone around them. Therefore, when a child masters a pose, it gives them patience, confidence and self-esteem.
Improved Physical Skills- such as balance, coordination, agility, sense of direction and clarity
ADHD And Autism-Kids with autism frequently experience delayed motor development, which can be improved as yoga tones muscles, enhances balance and stability, and develops body awareness and coordination. As motor skills develop, children have a greater sense of their physical self in space and in relation to others.
The beauty of yoga is that children can practice alone, with a friend or with a group. Many schools are now teaching yoga to young children, and there are many choices of after-school or weekend classes for kids and their families. Everyone can enjoy yoga – from tots to great-grandparents!
