Men naturally have both estrogens and androgens; however, for optimal function, they must stay in proper balance. Too much estrogen isn’t a problem just for women, men can also experience high estrogen symptoms.
The rise of estrogen dominance in men is most likely the chemicals in foods and the environment that mirror the effects of estrogen. When starting patients on a hormone program, I ask my patients to clean out their kitchen by getting rid of foods loaded with chemicals and to replace them with more natural and organic options. Foods like dark leafy greens and cruciferous vegetables ie: broccoli, cauliflower, brussels sprouts, red and green cabbage that can help reduce estrogen. I also make sure they are getting enough vitamin B12, folate, betaine, and choline. These nutrients, known as methyl donors, help to improve the biochemical process known as methylation which is an important function in estrogen metabolism and detoxification.
Symptoms of high estrogen in men include:
- Feeling extremely tired
- Increased abdominal fat
- Low libido
- Emotional and depressed
- Enlarged breast
